V12

from e-mail of Dmitriy Makarov and Franck Verbecke

Please find updated information on SBEP V12 (30% H2 explosion in 1/5 tunnel with/without obstacles) attached to this mail (V12 experimental data). Find attached also 2 published papers on the experiment in question:

1. Groethe M., Merilo E., Colton J. et al., “Large-scale Hydrogen deflagrations and detonations”, International Conference on Hydrogen Safety, Pisa, Italy, 8-10 September 2005. ISBN 88-8492-314-X

2. Sato Y., Merilo E., Groethe M. et al., “Homogeneous hydrogen deflagrations in a sub-scale vehicle tunnel”, 17th Annual Conference & Hydrogen Expo US, 12-17 March 2006, Long Beach, CA, USA.

The tunnel geometry (cross section, length, size of car's mock-up models) are clear from the papers. NHA conference paper reports that pressure transducers were installed on side of the tunnel surface.

There is contradictory information on the position of cars in case of obstructed tunnel explosion and the distance between mock-up cars in these papers. Last week Franck Verbecke contacted experimentalists and they confirmed that CARS ARE INSTALLED WITHIN HYDROGEN-AIR MIXTURE ONLY - 4 cars altogether (see Figure 3 in NHA paper), the rest of the tunnel is empty. The distance between cars is 1.6 of car's length (1520 mm). Air temperature for experiment without obstacles was +13.4C, with obstacles +9.1C.

Second of the attached papers has pressure dynamics for both experiments (with and without obstacles) at 1.0, 3.6, 10.6 and 30.4 m from the tunnel centre. Please find attached Excel table with digitized pressure dynamics.

Deadline for all cases 31.12.2007.
