One of the integrating activities of the EC supported network HySafe has been the collection and dissemination of existing know-how in a "Biennial Report on Hydrogen Safety". It has been decided to address the engineering demands and to provide a living memory to other potentially interested parties, like other projects, authorities, teachers, or even journalists. This induced several constraints, like overall size of the document, encyplopedia style, ommitting of basic scientific issues with little practical relevance etc.

This second edition has been edited using modern web tools, in particular the collaborative environment of a Wiki. This will allow an easy maintenance and updating of the document(s) in the future, even including contributions by the readers. Regarding technical content some gaps of the first edition have been closed, mainly based on material provided by contributions to the 2nd International Conference ICHS.

In general there is a good knowledge basis provided herewith. Systems may be designed, built and operated safely, if one accounts for the specific properties of hydrogen, considers the suggested mitigation methodology for safety critical settings and applies the safety management principles, all explained in detail in this report. So safety does not represent a real obstacle for the introduction. Rather and objective view, maybe a comparative assessment of the associated risks, and continuously improvement of all related

The partially still open issues - for instance some properties of hydrogen in the cryogenic temperature range, compatibility of new compound materials, some ignition phenomena, safety aspects of nano-scaled solid storage material, transitional combustion phenomena in particular DDT - may be answered by future research activities potentially coordinated by the International Association for Hydrogen Safety HySafe, the same institution which will continue to maintain this document.
