How To Match Safety Performances And Needs

The objective to match hydrogen installation safety performances and the production goals for which it is designed is a common problem for any technical installation. The optimization function for goals which are in some areas conflicting is given by improved design tools and continuous feedback from operation.

However as mentioned in the previous paragraph there are specific aspects, which have to part of the inherently safe features and/or of the safety barriers adopted, for which eventually the safety factors and limitation of risk low beyond the acceptable level is the governing principle. Such aspects are related to aspects as for instance:

  • Increased efficiency of the installation, which leads to the need for higher capacities, by the time the amount of hydrogen has to be kept as low as possible
  • Increased inherently safe features, usually resulting in more use of passive elements (piping, walls etc) , by the time the maintenance activities and the number of staff present on installation has to be kept as low as possible

Developing emergency plans and communication strategies with the community, by the time population is highly sensitive to any supplementary risk appeared in their area of living/work

The above mentioned examples are an illustration of the need to keep a good balance between the needs and uses of the hydrogen installations and the ir operation under extremely low risk producing regimes.
